Practice Project #1: Image Editing
FotoFlexer - cut subjects out of the photo's background - See video
Pixler Editor - wand tool, clone tool, layers panel, text tool - see video

The Project - Use the images in the gallery below to create a composite photo poster for To Kill a Mockingbird. A composite photo combines two or more photos into one. You do not have to use all the images. Decide which people you will use to represent characters in the book. 
  1. Use FotoFlexer to cut out images. Save them as png files to a location of your choice.
  2. Create your composite photo poster in Pixlr Editor. Save it as a jpeg to a location of your choice.

Practice Project #2: Page Layout
The Project - Use images you edited in Project 1 to create a flyer for To Kill a Mockingbird. Start with a blank page. You do not have to use all the images.
  • Use Lucidpress to complete the project.
  • Choose an image for your page background. Increase the brightness if necessary.
  • Place images and text on the page.
  • Overlay images and text by using layers.
  • Use text wrap in your layout.
  • Use warped text in your layout.

Common Core State Standards
At the very least, projects like #2 and #3 (when the students do their own writing) will meet the following Production and Distribution of Writing standards. Obviously, many other standards could also be met in such projects.

Grades 11-12
W.11-12.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or shared writing products in response to ongoing feedback, including new arguments or information.

Grades 9-10
W.9-10.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or shared writing products, taking advantage of technology’s capacity to link to other information and to display information flexibly and dynamically.

Grades 6-8
WHST.6-8.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and present the relationships between information and ideas clearly and efficiently.

Grade 5
W.5.6 With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of two pages in a single sitting.

Grade 4W.4.6 With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting.
