Three Free Alternatives to the no-longer-free Clipping Magic (image background remover)

Clipping Magic is a great tool; the best online tool I have ever seen for removing an image's background to "cut out" the subject of the photo and create a png file with a transparent background.  It is so easy that anyone can do it successfully, and the results are excellent. The once free tool is now a paid service. The prices are reasonable if it's a tool you use often.
In the following subscription plans, one credit is equal to one download.
  • Lite Plan - $2.99/mo for 15 credits
Unused credits roll over for a total of up to 75 credits.
  • Standard Plan - $7.99/mo for 100 credits
Unused credits roll over (up to 500)
    Bulk clipping availab le
  • Pro Plan - $14.99/mo for 500 credits
Unused credits roll over (up to 2500)
    Bulk clipping available
For more information about pricing and subscription details, see the subscription plans link above.

Free Alternatives to Clipping Magic
If you don't want to pay for the Clipping Magic service, several free and online services are available. They are definitely not as user-friendly as Clipping Magic, but they will get the job done with a little extra patience and effort.

Fotoflexer
Fotoflexer is the tool which is most similar to Clipping Magic, although it is not quite as intuitive. After uploading your photo
  1. click the Geek tab on the far right in the tabs menu at the top of the page.
  2. click the Smart Cutout button.
  3. work through the tutorial instructions.
Be sure to switch between original view and processed view at the top of the page to see the results as you are working.  You can only edit in original view. One of the major differences between Clipping Magic and Fotoflexer is that in Fotoflexer you may have to actually color in all the areas you want to keep or delete, although the Predict Unknown Areas button will help.

Online Image Editor
With Online Image Editor, you can very easily remove a solid colored background. See these instructions.

Remove Background From Image
Another site I found after posting this blog is Remove Background from Image.  Read these instructions.

Why pay for it if you need dozens per month? Cuttheimage.com is too expensive per photo anyway :(

Even Gizmo's Freeware posted an article about Clipping Magic and acknowledged that downloading images worked on with Clipping Magic is not free. What a hypocrisy.

I'm an editor for Gizmo's Freeware. The article you reference states that while you have to pay to download the image at Clipping Magic, you can use a screen capture program to grab the image instead of paying to download it.
Anyone who wishes to read the article can find it here:

There are also WordPress, Magento, Opencart implementations.

We don't care your one time fee, if we want a paying service, we will go to magic clipping. I need only few images but not every months, so I won't pay a subscription and I won't pay 1 or 2$ per image, because it's too expernsive for a dozen of images.

Clipping magic is the most advanced tools for photo cutouts but it is not free. So here is another clipping magic clone which has similar interface and features line drawing edge, marking foreground and background, feathering and bluring, zoom and pan, background preview with different colors and many more. Try it here <a href="http://editphotosforfree.com/photoapps/remove-background-from-image-online" >Background Changer</a>

Great list--many thanks! I wanted to add that I'd been trying most of an evening to get the Clipping Magic site to work for me without success using IE as a browser. Hopefully it will work with Firefox. (I don't mind paying the modest fees, especially since every other such service is moving the same direction), and by the way, someone mentioned Bonanza Background Burner. I used it when it was free. It got to be very very good from just "meh," but then they started charging like $90 per month for the good version with a second-class free version that's really crappy & difficult to use. I don't recommend it, and their customer service borders on evil when it comes to canceling the paid service. .

I also try to avoid ones that require a download; I do have antivirus/malware protection but that's not foolproof. I recognized one of the suggestions above as requiring a download, almost before you realize what's going on. I aborted it so I can't knowledgeably review it. There are so many nasty things packed in free downloads these days I just don't take that risk.

Another one I plan to investigate if I still can't get Clipping Magic to work is Fotofuze. Does anyone have any experience with it?

Just used Cut The Image for 5 photos over the last 24 hours. Longest wait time was 1 hr, but were mostly ready in 15 mins. Thanks for the tip!

There are 2 free programs you can download that are really good at removing background from images. http://shop.daisytrail.com/craftartist_compact/ is a free version, I have the paid version for professionals and it has a Cut Out Studio, and it uses red and green to select the portions you want to remove. I`m assuming the free version has the same tool. http://www.photofiltre-studio.com/news-en.htm has a free version (for personal use, not for profit projects) and all you have to do is select Image menu, choose transparent color and use the color picker to select which color will become transparent - gone!. This works best for simple background, but you can also use the select tool as you would in Photoshop to cut out sections of the background. Paint dot Net also has a good selection tool for selecting portions of the background at a time in order to delete them. Paint dot Net is found at http://www.getpaint.net/index.html and can be used FREE for both personal and commercial uses - see the license. I use all of these programs on a regular basis. For those being very rude about the cost of the services out there should take a moment to remember those services pay to have a website and pay to have the programs created that do that wonderful work and they too have families. If you are starting out as an artist there are some great programs for free or for a low cost for startups. Use my contact form if you want info on other programs for other editing purposes. http://www.angelhoney.ca/contact/

You can continue using Clipping Magic provided you do not need a transparent background. Download SnapCrab screen capture program then erase the image background as usual in Clipping Magic which shows your progress in the right hand picture. Once completed use SnapCrab to grab the completed image without original background. Cannot have a transparent background as SnapCrab saves chequered background.

But the interesting thing about Clipping Magic IS the transparent background. For other tools, they can be found everywhre
